Marketing Monday - Gift Certificates with a Twist
By · Comments
Gift Certificates are a great way to boost sales and bring in new customers. Often a certificate is sent as a piece of paper or card, or is an email with a voucher code on it.
Recently, I have come across a couple of great ways of presenting gift certificates.
The first was at Lila & May. On Australia Day, they posted on their fan page about their Plantable Gift Certificates. Lucky recipients of gift certificates receive their certificate along with seeds of a Lemon-scented Bottlebrush. Receiving one of these gift certificates would certainly be memorable.
The second example was at The Phoenix Lunch last year. I won a gift voucher for an online shop. The voucher was printed then presented in a gift box with a ribbon around it. It didn’t get lost as a voucher in an envelope would have!

By · CommentsI know I have blogged about this before, but I just came across a great post by Elena over at EP Designs. Just before Christmas she had a giveaway on her blog, and the winner of the grand prize sent her a wonderful thank you gift. Elena has included details, including photos of the gift on her blog here.
Saying thank you and sending cards and gifts is something we don’t do nearly enough. In this case, the prize winner got some promotion for her business too because not only did Elena include the details of the gift on her blog, she also linked to the senders website. (if you want to check out the winners website, go to Enchanted Quilling)
There are a lot of different ways you can say thank you, including:
- Send a card in the mail
- Send an e-card
- Send an email
- Send a gift
- Post on your blog, website, Facebook or Twitter
- Make a phone call
You can also say thank you for many different things. These are a few ideas for your business:
- placing an order
- unexpected links to your site or blog
- testimonials
- support
- for being a great supplier
Start thinking about who you can say thank you to today and say it to them.

By · CommentsI have a few questions about Facebook and would really like some feedback from my wonderful readers who use Facebook. The first is about friends.
Do you friend everyone who sends you a request? If so, why? If not, why not?
I currently have around 15 friend requests sitting there from people I don’t know. I have never met them in real life and none of them have sent me an introduction. The only thing we seem to have in common is mutual friends. I’ve also had a few people send friend requests to me because I joined their business fan page. Again, I’ve never met them anywhere except by a friend recommending I become a fan of their business.
So, what do you do with your friends? Do you accept every request that comes through, accept only those people you have met in real life or online elsewhere? Or do you just ignore the requests.
Also, do you send requests to people who you share friends with or who join your fan page? If so, why? If not, why not?
I’m just curious to see what other people do. Please add a comment and let me know
I look forward to hearing your comments.
Marketing Monday - Cool categories
By · Comments
Many business mums have an online shop that have the standard categories telling people what is on offer.
Depending on what you are selling, you could mix it up a bit with your categories. This can help your customers find what they are looking for as well as give you some different search terms in the search engines.
Over at Little Choopie, Amanda has an option where customers can search by colour. This is a great idea as she sells headbands, clips and jewellery for little girls (among other things). If a Mum is searching for a headband to go with a particular dress or outfit, then the colour option will save a lot of time. And yes, parents do do this.
Over at Everything Boys, they have a shop by brand category as well as their other categories. Over at The Needlework Boutique, Bernadette has her main categories set up by designer, and she has a Charts by Theme category.
With a bit of creativity and thought, you can come up with some cool categories for your business. Think about the sorts of things your customer may be looking for, and create a category around that.
What cool categories do you have on your online shop?

Too often I visit the site of a business mum to find there is only a contact form! The main reason I visit the site is to see where they are located as, where possible, I prefer supporting local business mums. There are a lot of different reasons for the lack of contact details.
This weeks Friday Five report will look at five different contact methods you may want to put on you site as well as options for phone numbers, fax numbers, postal address and email address.
As always, this report is only $5 through PayPal.

By · CommentsI’m trying to take advantage of the boys being tired from our Australia Day adventures yesterday and write Friday Five reports for the next few weeks, as well as schedule some blog posts. As part of this process, I started looking around at different sites, Facebook fan pages, and any other places I can find for inspiration for topics for these reports.
Over at Annette Piper’s blog, I came across this post that reminded me of today. Annette shares some of the sites she has come across while clicking through the Internet. As always, she has started her post with a photo of a stunning piece of jewellery.
It also got me thinking - where do you get inspiration for ideas in your business? Is it from blogs, books, other people, markets, your kids, or something else? I would love to hear what inspires you in your business. Please share what inspires you by adding a comment.

Last weekend, the boys and I went and stood in line at Chadstone Shopping Centre waiting to see a couple of the stars of ABC3 at the ABC Shop. We stood in line, waiting for over an hour & didn’t get in - but that’s not the point of my post.
There were hundreds of parents with primary school aged children waiting patiently in the line to get into the ABC Shop. At one point, the staff from Adairs came around and handed out their catalogues to the parents in the line. It gave us something to read while we were waiting as well as some marketing for the shop (which was one of the shops the line passed).
Further up in the line, the staff from Jasper Junior Toys came and gave all the children a sticker to promote their business. This was another shop the line passed.
I was surprised that more of the shops hadn’t taken up the opportunity to go along the line and promte themselves to the families waiting patiently. I also wished I had brought information about the Business Mums Magazine with me!
When you are preparing to hand information to a line of people who are in your target market, make sure you have permission to do so. I imagine that the businesses in the shopping centre would be fine to hand out information, however businesses from outside may run in to issues. Instead of taking hundred of your information, you may want to take just a few so that when you get chatting to those around you, you can give them a postcard or sample.
If there is an event you are involved with, such as an expo where people will be in line before the doors open, ask the organisers if it’s OK for you to go out to the line to give them a flyer or sample.
This is also a fantastic strategic alliance opportunity - you could join forces with a few other businesses to create a brochure for people to read to keep them occupied while they are waiting.

By · CommentsI discovered a new widget on Facebook today while writing a Friday Five report. So, just for fun, I thought I’d blog about some of the fan pages I’ve joined & add a fan button so you can follow them too.
The first one is a relatively new page called F.B.G.S, which stands for Facebook Garage Sale. Many WAHMs use their fan pages to have sales for their fans, this page brings all those sales together so you can get yourself a bargain. There have been quite a few garage sales so far, and they look great (pity I don’t need any baby items at the moment). I’m sure this page will take off as more people jump on the Facebook garage sale wagon and more and more products will be offered.
