Friday Five - How TO promote your business on Facebook pages
Posted by: | Comments
Following on from last weeks Friday Five, here are five tips on how to promote your business via Facebook page.
- Tag other pages - tagging pages is a great way to be seen on the business pages of businesses you support. One of the best ways is to do this as part of a recommendation to explain why you are tagging this page.
- Introduce yourself - some pages allow you to post on their wall. Post an introduction of yourself and tag your page, and include a comment about the business you are posting on. For example “Hi, I’m Jane from My Business Page (with tag). It’s great to be part of this page, I love your products”.
- Promotion pages - there are a lot of different pages that allow business mums to promote their business on their pages. Join these pages and use them to promote your business. Make sure you read the guidelines on the pages and post in keeping with their guidelines.
- Terms & conditions - review the Facebook terms & conditions & other hints Facebook has. They have strict conditions about promoting your page, and in some of these there are also some great tips. These conditions include how you can promote your page on other pages.
- Be involved - get involved with your favourite pages. Read posts and reply to the conversation. You never know when the chance to recommend your business may come up, or pages of some of your other favourite businesses.
I hope these tips are useful to help you promote your business on other Facebook pages. If you have any other tips, please share them with us.

Posted by: | Comments
If you have visited Facebook pages, you may see lists of people posting simply to promote your business. As a page owner, this can be very annoying, but people still do it.
I thought today I would post 5 ways NOT to promote your business via Facebook pages. These things may result in your posts being deleted, you being kicked off the page and banned, and even result in you being reported to Facebook.
- Introduction - do you go to networking events and say “Hi, I’m Jane and I sell widgets, come and buy from me”? No… well this is what a lot of people do when they join a page. They say “Hi, I’m Jane from World Wide Widgets (with a link to their business page) come and join my page”. This gets really annoying reading posts like these. Better to say something like ” Hi, I’m Jane from World Wide Widgets (with a link to your page), what a great page this is, I look forward to getting to know your business”. If people are interested, they will join your page.
- Tagging a promo - there are a lot of businesses out there who will post a promo on their wall, then tag a number of other pages. Sometimes this is good because the pages they tag are set up for these kinds of promotions, however others are not. Be careful when you do this to make sure the pages you tag are happy for these sorts of things to be added to their wall.
- Tagging to get on a wall - I have seen a lot of businesses who will tag other businesses just to be listed on their wall. Again, this is OK if the business you are tagging is set up to accept these sorts of posts, otherwise if you are tagging a business, be open to why you are tagging them. For example you may recommend Jane’s Widget Page because she has great widgets your followers would enjoy. This way you have a reason to tag this page.
- Inviting EVERYONE - when inviting people to join your page, be selective. Not everyone is interested in widgets. I get invited to join almost every page and at one point almost all of them had to do with maternity wear. I’m not pregnant and not planning to be, so these pages were of no interest. Especially if you invite a lot of people to a lot of pages, it can get annoying and will result in them blocking or deleting you off their list.
- Friending page owners - this is something else that can get annoying. Many business owners set up pages for their businesses so they can keep the personal things apart from their business information and don’t want to be friended by everyone, especially if it’s for the purpose of promoting your business. Instead, if you like the look of a business owner and want to friend them, include a note introducing yourself and why you want to be on their friend list.
I hope these help you with promoting yourself and your business on Facebook. If you have any other things to add to the do not do list, please add them.
Next week I aim to include points on what TO do to promote your business on Facebook pages.

Did we get your attention?
Are you on Facebook? Do you have a lot of friends and pages you follow? How much attention do you pay to requests that are given out? Could you be missing out on opportunities?
My 6 year old is currently obsessed with lizards - I’m trying to get some inspiration for Christmas & his birthday (they are a week apart) as he says he wants a lizard as a pet (that’s not going to happen).
I know I have quite a few people who run toy shops and even someone who does kids parties with snakes & lizards on my friend list.
A few days ago, I sent out a request asking for responses from anyone who has lizard type products I could purchase for my 6, nearly 7 year old. I had 2 responses from people recommending other people who had goodies we might be interested in. None from the people who had toy shops or the person who does kids parties!
So, how much attention do you pay to the requests that are posted by your friends and contacts on Facebook? Could you be missing out on an opportunity for new customers? If your business can’t help, then maybe one of your friends or other contacts can.
Oh, and I’m still looking for ideas for my son for his birthday, can anyone help?

Inviting your friends is easy
Are you all for making it easier for people to follow you on Facebook and invite their friends? Tina Gray over at Tina Gray {dot} Me is. She has set herself a challenge to learn 101 things in 1001 days, and one of those things was to learn how to add an “invite friends” tab on her facebook page. You can read her post here.
She has generously posted the instruction on how to do this on her blog and you can follow these instructions here.
I’m not one for re-inventing the wheel, so I’ll leave this at that. Adding an invite friends tab is easy, especially if you follow Tina’s fabulous instructions. One of the things I like about the tab is the friends box is much bigger than if you use the “Suggest to Friends” link, and the tab also stands out much more than the link, encouraging your “likers” to invite their friends to join your page.
Thank you Tina for sharing the instructions
Edited to add: it looks like Tina has removed that post from her blog.

Posted by: | Comments
I see a lot of Facebook business pages, and am invited to join a lot of them. There are a few things I look for in a business page when deciding whether or not to join them.
For this weeks Friday Five, I thought I’d share some of these with you as they may help you attract more “likers” to your page.
- Location - where possible, I like to support Australian businesses. If I can’t see where you are (even if it just a country or a state) I may not join.
- Description - there is a place to add a brief description about your business. If it is not obvious what your business does, make sure you complete this. It will help get potential visitors interested in your business and they will want to find out more.
- Image or Logo - many businesses have a custom image created for their Facebook page. These look great, however if you don’t have one, make sure you upload your logo or an image that represents your business.
- URL - I’m amazed at the number of businesses that have a website that don’t add it to their business page. In the Info tab there is a place you can add the URL of your business, your blog, and other sites you sell your products, such as Etsy or Made It.
- Posts & Updates - there are a number of pages I have been invited to join that have no messages on their walls. To attract new “likers”, add some posts & updates to your wall. This also gives potential “likers” an idea of what to expect when they join your page.
I hope this will help you attract more “likers” and have a busier and more effective business page.

Use the discussion for blog posts
Yesterday I read a great post on the Backpacks 4 Aussie Kids blog. Backpacks 4 Aussie Kids puts together backpacks full of necessities to give to kids in care, many of whom have left home with nothing.
The post I read was about the carer allowance foster parents receive - you can read the post here.
The reason I am talking about this is the post came after a discussion on their Facebook business page. You can view their business page here. The discussion is posted on their wall.
Starting discussion on your business page can be great inspiration for blog posts. You can use the responses to do further research and blog about reality vs perception on a topic, or even blog about the topic in general.
There are a few different ways you can use your business page to generate discussion. The most popular seems to be posting a question on your wall as it will show up in the news feed of your “likers”. The other way is to use the Discussion board feature of the pages. If you do use the discussion board feature, write a wall post letting people know it is there and invite people to take part in the discussion.
If you are a member of a few different business pages, there may be discussions on other pages that can spark blog posts, just as the Backpacks 4 Aussie Kids discussion inspired this post.
One thing to remember, if you quote people in the discussion, make sure you acknowledge them. It is also a good idea to ask their permission to use their quote.

Posted by: | Comments
It’s been a busy week this week, so I haven’t been doing much blogging.
Facebook is a great place to promote your business, especially if that’s a place where your target market hang out.
This week, I’ll share 5 useful links to help you promote your business through Facebook.
- Promotion Guidelines - This is something I stumbled on. It’s hidden where you edit your fanpage and is well worth a read. It contains guidelines of how you are allowed to promote your fanpage outside Facebook.
- Competitions Guidelines - If you have a fanpage, you must read this. It’s regarding competitions and promotions on Facebook. There are a number of things you are not allowed to do, including having a competition to grow the number of fans! If you currently run promotions, READ THIS!
- FAQ, Business Accounts - While it makes sense to have 2 profiles - one personal and one for business, this is against the Facebook TOS. This link has questions & answers about having a business account on Facebook.
- Username for your Page - Once you have 25 “likers”, you can get a username for your fanpage. This means people can find you at www.facebook.com/yourbusinessname instead of a long URL.
- Facebook Pages - Yes, Facebook Pages has their own page. It has a lot of hints and tips to help you with your page.
I hope these links are useful for you. If you have any other links or tips for Facebook Pages, share them by adding a comment.

Posted by: | Comments
In my travels, I came across a fantastic blog post - “7 Cross Promotion Ideas to Boost Traffic and Sales“. There are some great ideas in this post to boost the traffic and sales from your site, more specifically your blog.
One of the suggestions is to join a “Comment Club”. There are many programs that exist, one that I’m a member of is Blog Whammy. This is a great way to increase comments, links and get inspiration for your blog posts. As you are told each week which blog is being “Whammy’d”, you don’t need to remember where you are up to.
Another way to cross promote is with your Facebook Fanpages. You can recommend other fanpages in exchange for them recommending you to their fans. This is easy to do and can help you get more fans, it is then up to you to turn them in to customers.
Running a competition is another great way to cross promote. You can swap prizes, or run a joint competition that runs through both your databases.
There are many ways you can cross promote with businesses that share your target market. If you have done something brilliant, or has brought great results, please add a comment and let us know what you have done.

Yet another question!
Having a Facebook fanpage is great promotion for your business, however it can sometimes be hard to know how much to post there.
As you may have seen in previous posts about Facebook on this blog, fans don’t like too many posts in a day. There’s also a danger of not posting enough - for example, posting once, then not coming back for weeks, or even months.
I don’t know what the answer is to this question, so I would like to hear from you - how often do you post updates to your Facebook fanpage? As a fan, how many updates are you happy to see before they start to annoy you?
Please share your thoughts by adding a comment and joining in the discussion.

Not this sort of fan...
Facebook fan pages are a great way to promote your business. Recently I read a post on Super WAHM about Facebook banning businesses. This is an excellent post and one that every business mum with a Facebook fan page should read. As well as the post, read the comments as there is more information in there, including one from a business who had their company page banned.
Running a competition or giveaway for being a fan is off limits. So, how do you go about getting more fans? Here are a few ideas.
- Recommend other Fanpages - this may sound weird, however it works! With my Business Mums Daily fan page, if I know one of the sites or blogs I am posting about has a fan page, I link to it in the status update using the @ tag. A number of people from those fan pages have since joined and become a fan of my page too.
- Invite your friends - your friend list will change from time to time with new friends being added. Regularly go through your friend list and invite them to join your page. Just remember not to invite the same friends too often as this can get annoying and be counter productive.
- Link on your website & blog - include a button or link on your website and blog inviting your visitors, customers and readers to become a fan of your Facebook fan page. Not everyone will join, however if they don’t know you have a fan page, they won’t be able to.
- Invite your newsletter subscribers - if you have an email newsletter, invite your subscribers to become fans. Include an invitation and link with your newsletter and include your button in every newsletter to encourage new subscribers to join.
These are just a few ideas to help you increase the number of fans on your fan page. If you have any other ideas that are in keeping with the terms of service of Facebook, please add a comment and share your ideas. I look forward to hearing them.
