Custom made & one of a kind – when an item is sold

Do you put items in a gallery?

There are a lot of business mums who create custom made and one of a kind items for sale and sell them in online shops.

Many shopping carts have a function that removes an item from a shop when it is out of stock. Another thing that can happen is someone falls in love with an item and wants to buy it, but it is already out of stock.

So, what do you do when a custom made or one of a kind item has been sold?

One great thing I’ve seen some people do is to put items that have been sold in to a gallery to showcase work that has been done in the past.

This has been done in a couple of ways.

The first is to create a new category for your shop called “Gallery” where the items cannot be added to the shopping cart. When an item has been purchased, the shop owner moves the item to this category, still showcasing it to visitors, however clearly marking these items are not available for sale.

The second is to create a section on your website called “Gallery” where you showcase past items, taking them out of your shopping cart completely.

Another thing you can do if you have a blog, is to create a blog post about each item, including photographs and the story behind the item. If your customer has sent you photographs of them using the item, you may want to include those too, with permission from your customer.

If you create custom made or one of  a kind items, do you have some other ways to showcase items you have sold?

Syndicate other people’s blogs

Share some of the amazing blogs you follow

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about value adding on your Facebook page by posting feeds from other people’s blogs.

Well, I now know how you can syndicate the feed from blogs you follow on NetworkedBlogs.

If you want to syndicate a blog, make sure you are following the blog first. Then go to your page and click to “Edit Page”.

In the options on the left, click on Apps, then under “Networked Blogs”, click on “Go to application”. You will then see a list of the blogs you follow, and you can tick the blogs you wish to have published on your wall. This will give you an automatic feed to your page of your favourite blogs.

Before publishing a feed, make sure the blog has information that is relevant to your followers as the posts will appear automatically.

Do you have your media releases on your website?

Can people easily find your news?

So, yesterday was a public holiday, so there was no Marketing Monday post. Today’s post is also a marketing tip.

Do you have your media releases on your website?

This is something I’m sure I have blogged about before, I just can’t find the posts to link to them!

Sending media releases is a great way to let the media know about what is going on in your business. Putting your media releases on your website is also a great way to let not only the media, but also your customers what is going on. They are also a great way to get new content on your site, especially if you create and send media releases regularly.

With media releases, it’s best to have them in a text format people can copy and paste, rather than in PDF form. This way if a publication is looking for a filler story, they can just copy and paste your release.

On the page with your media releases, include a note giving the media permission to reproduce your media releases on their website or in their newsletter, newspaper or magazine. Also let them know your contact details if they want to get in contact with you for more information or to expand on the story, and to let you know if they have used your media release.

Another helpful item is to have some photographs the media can use. You may want to post web quality images and include a note saying that print quality photographs can be supplied on request.

Including media releases on your website is no guarantee that you will receive publicity, but it definitely can’t hurt.

Public Holidays

Relax on a public holiday

Today is a public holiday in Melbourne. One of the features of the labour day holiday is the Moomba festival. This is a great time to spend with the family as there are a lot of great activities, and many of these are free!

What do you do on a public holiday?

Is it just like any other day and you’re madly working, or do you take the day off to be with your family?

For me, I’m having a day off – this post was written last week and scheduled to be published today (I love this feature of WordPress). If you’re worried about having the day off, think, if you were working for someone else, wouldn’t you have a public holiday off?

So, what do you do with your public holidays?

Friday Five – Uses for Recipes

Recipes can be a great way to promote your business. Before you dismiss this idea, look at the number of cookbooks in the book shops, cooking shows on TV, and recipes in any number of magazines you can pick up and flip through at the doctor’s surgery.

You may have your favourite recipes, but have you thought to use them in your business? Here are 5 ways you can use recipes in your business:

  • Recipe Card – these can be great promotional items. Instead of a “boring” promotional post card, print a recipe on the front. Include your business logo, colours and contact details and you may find people keep the card, and, if you produce different cards, they may even start collecting them!
  • Blog posts – many people search for recipes, I’ve been known to do this too from time to time. Post some of your favourite recipes on your blog and invite your readers to submit some of their favourites. In the lead up to special occasions, you can tailor the recipes to suit (eg. recipes to give Mum breakfast in bed for Mother’s Day)
  • eBook – compile your favourite recipes, and even some from your customers, to create a promotional eBook, either to give away when people subscribe to your newsletter list, to sell, or use as a gift with purchase.
  • Demonstrate your products – if you sell items to do with cooking, you can share some of your recipes to demonstrate your products. As well as sharing your recipes, accompany them with descriptions/photographs of the products that go with them.
  • Contribution to websites – there are a number of different websites that are open to contributions and are looking for recipes to share with their readers. Many of these websites will include a bio box to promote your business.

Whether or not you use recipes in your business will depend on what your business is and who your target market it. If your target market is busy Mums who are time poor and looking for nutritious meals to feed their families, this could be a great addition to your business.

Facebook shout outs – use the alphabet

Use the alphabet to plan your shout outs

A couple of days ago, I saw a great idea on Facebook on the page of Ah – Tissue. She has started using the alphabet for her shout outs. Each post has shout outs to businesses that start with a particular letter of the alphabet.

If you do shout outs on your page, this is a great idea – it gives you 26 different posts (at least), and you can spread it out as you wish.

There are a number of ways you can organise this:

  • Do a post with a single shout out and description of why you like that business. You can do more than one of these a day with the same letter (eg, Monday is A, Tuesday is B, etc and do 3 or 4 shout outs a day)
  • Do a post with multiple shout outs, simply list a number of businesses in one post. You can either do one a day, or more than 1 a day of a single letter, or even go through more than 1 letter in a day.

The number of posts and the number of letters is up to you, especially when you start getting to some of the harder letters, such as X!

This is also a good way to organise your shout outs and help you promote other pages in your database.

Mother’s Day Ideas – Free Gift Wrapping

Wrap gifts for Mother's Day

Do you sell gifts for Mother’s Day? Free gift wrapping is a great value add you can offer your customers, especially if people are buying gifts for their mother’s who are away from them.

Gift wrapping doesn’t have to be expensive, you can pick up nice paper and ribbon from many different suppliers. If you get some plain or generic paper, it can be used for different occasions throughout the year.

Free gift wrapping can be an optional extra that customers can select at check out, or something standard for all gifts bought in the lead up to Mother’s Day. Even if someone is buying a gift for themselves, they will get a nice surprise opening a beautifully wrapped gift.

Guest Bloggers

Get fresh content with guest bloggers

Do you have a dedicated following on your blog, but are struggling to get new information on your blog, want some expert information or simply want a day off from blogging? Inviting guest bloggers might be a good way to get some new information on your blog.

If you are looking at inviting guest bloggers to contribute, the first thing to look at is the audience of your blog – do you know who they are? This will help you find guest bloggers, whether you approach experts directly, or open it up for anyone to contribute.

Once you know who your audience is, you will be able to write a list of topics – this can be a list for your own information, or a list that you make public when you ask for contributors.

How often do you want to publish a guest post? It could be weekly, monthly, or whenever you have a post to publish. This will help you work out how many guest bloggers you ask. For example, you may want to have a guest blogger each week, and have them post regularly, so you may want to get 4 guest bloggers who send you a post once a month.

Another thing to include are some guidelines. In this you may want to consider:

  • Who can post – will you accept contributions from anyone, or just people you invite to post
  • Editability – do you want to be able to edit articles for length or clarity? Or even to change spelling such as Mom to Mum?
  • Exclusivity – do you want the posts to be exclusive to your site, or can they be posted elsewhere. Do you want them to be always exclusive, or will you let the author use them elsewhere after a certain number of days?
  • Links – are links allowed in the articles, or are they saved for a bio box in the end? What about affiliate links?
  • Submission – how do people get their posts to you? Should they email them to you to add, or will you set them up with an account so they can add things themself?

These are just a few ideas to help you get started. If you are a guest blogger or accept posts by guest bloggers, please add any tips you have.

Marketing Monday – Commenting on blog posts

Recently I’ve seen a number of people on Facebook and on a couple of forums I’m on asking about SEO and how to get their websites ranked highly in search engines. One of the many strategies is to get incoming links to your website.

One great way to get incoming links is to comment on blogs. With most blogs, when you add a comment, you can include a link to your website.

When commenting on blogs, make sure your comments are relevant to the discussion. If not, your comment may be marked as spam and not be published.

If one of your goals is to get traffic to your site, look at commenting on blogs that have a similar target market to you, however be careful not to be seen to try and “poach” customers.

When looking for blogs to post on, one easy way to find blogs is to look at some of your favourite businesses, many online businesses will have a blog attached to their website. There are also many that use NetworkedBlogs on Facebook and publish their posts to their business page.

Posting comments is also great to keep a blog going. Blog authors love hearing from their readers and having discussions on their posts. This also adds to the experience of the readers, and having comments encourages more comments.

So, add some incoming links to your website as well as add to your favourite blogs by adding comments today.

How often do you update?

How often do you update your site?

How often do you update your website?

Updating your website could include adding a new product, tweaking the text on information pages, adding a blog post or review, or even adding a copy of a newsletter.

Search engines love websites that have regularly updated content, which is one reason why blogs do so well in the search engines.

Adding new information and/or products to your website can also be a reason for people to come back to visit your site, as well as giving you a reason to post an announcement on Facebook or send an update to your email list.

Adding new products can also be a reason to contact past customers, especially if it’s the sort of product that will compliment the products they have bought previously.

So, how often do you update your website?
